Ven. Marut goes ballistic on suffering with “Running a Car Bomb Into Your Self-Cherishing: The Radical Techniques of Lojong.” In this talk, Ven. Marut explodes the transformative potential of the Tibetan Buddhist technique known as lojong. The literal translation of lojong is “mind training.” However, in Tibet the place of the mind is considered to be at the heart. A more enlightened translation for lojong would be “developing the good heart.” The powerful practice of lojong combats our selfishness, demolishes our pride, and transforms our anger into an unconquerable force of love. We emerge from the practice with a deep feeling of relief when we realize that we are not powerless in the face of our own and others’ suffering.

Monty Python famously asked the question many of us ponder, “What is the meaning of life?” For two evenings April 21st and 22nd at Woodman’s in Essex, Ven. Marut answers this age-old question in his talk, “The Meaning of Life.” Should we choose to accept it, each and every one of us has a mission and a purpose. But it may not be the one we think it is. The mission is not to just consume more goods, grow old and die. Ven. Marut sheds light on how to focus your life, give meaning to even the simplest of daily actions, and bring about true and lasting happiness.

Buddhism has two wings, compassion and wisdom, which work together to create a soaring practice. Ven. Marut’s second teaching at the Vajramudra Dharma Center on Thursday afternoon April 22, places its focus on the wing of wisdom by exploring the relationship between deceptive reality (the way the world appears to work) and ultimate reality (the way the world truly works). His talk, “The Two Realities: Teachings from Arya Nagarjuna and Master Shantideva” will illuminate the heart of Buddhist philosophy, emptiness, through the texts of these seminal ancient Masters. When we learn how to pierce through mere appearances, we become clear on how our actions create the world. Suddenly, the radical idea of perfecting ourselves and the world around us becomes joyously possible.

Divine Madness: Sitting at the Feet of the Master

DIVINE MADNESS: Sitting at the Feet of the Master
Divine Madness explores the peaks and pitfalls of finding and serving a spiritual Teacher. This journey is traditionally known as bhakti yoga or “the path of devotion,” and is often considered to be the fastest path to liberation. But with greater speed comes higher risk, and the process of surrendering to a “guru” or teacher is often greatly misunderstood. Cindy Lee uses the life stories of some of the greatest devotees, the Mahasiddhas, to illuminate how bhakti yoga truly works.
