Thanks to Fred and Hilary who found ‘olympic’ maple-covered donuts! Today Lama Marut did a long-playing teaching on how the donut is the perfect expression of emptiness; The hole in the donut makes possible the donut… but the donut equally makes possible the hole. The last few classes have been wonderful for helping our minds become more supple in sitting with the apparent paradoxes of a spiritual life ~ as Lamaji says, to us, the truth seems paradoxical.
He also said:
“We know the old adage ‘An unexamined life is not worth living’ … well someone also said ‘An over-examined life is not worth living either’.”
The Bhagavad Gita course offers a commentary on the seeming tension between ‘working hard’ and ‘relaxing’ – between working on our karma, and simultaneously not being attached to the fruits of action.
* If you want something, make sure someone else gets it first.
* If you don’t want something, make sure you don’t do it to others.
* If you want to keep something, give it away.
Each of these enunciations of karma insist that we see ourselves making sure others are taken care of first, and thereby ensure that we will feel safe, happy and satisfied in the future.
